Tempe’s own Marquee Theatre hosted two of the biggest alternative bands out right now. Against Me!, and Silversun Pickups both saw it fit to come pay the valley another visit, and they were welcomed with nothing less than wide open arms and affection by their fans.
The first out of the duo to take the stage was Against Me! At 8:50. Opening with their song “High Pressure Low”, off of their new album White Crosses. Opening with the new stuff paved the way for beloved favorites like “Thrash Unreal” off of their 2007 album New Wave. However, that was followed by the song “White Crosses”, obviously from their newest record. The band did a great job at mixing the old and the new. That was soon followed by yet another favorite “White People for Peace”. One could not help but notice the basic light setup, and how it proved to ...

Slightly Stoopid @ Celebrity Theatre

The Expendables and Slightly Stoopid met here in the valley at the Celebrity Theatre to deliver the desert dwellers a night of reggae fueled merriment. The entire placed seemed to buzz with excitement even before the first act came on. Fans from all over the valley came with extremely high expectations for Thursday’s lineup.
The party was sparked with a performance by The Expendables who took the stage at 8:00 PM. It took them only an hour to warm up the crowd for Slightly Stoopid to take the stage. They played tunes off of their albums No Time to Worry, Gettin’ Dirty, and Open Container. They closed with one of their better known songs “Bowl for Two”. The performance left the viewers with even higher expectations of the show than when they had first arrived.
Unlike most shows, the crowd was not left to sit and make their own entertainment ...

Cake @ The Marquee 6/18

Cake came on stage to a nearly sold out crowd at the Marquee with no opening bands. Fans were pleasanlty surprised; this allowed them to enjoy nearly a solid two hours of performance with a brief 15 minute interval. The first set contained such hits as, “Stickshifts and Safetybelts” off their second album Fashion Nugget released in 1996, and “Sheep Go to Heaven” off the third album Prolonging the Magic released in 1998. Half way through the first set lead singer John McCrea brought out some small apple tree sapplings to give away to lucky winners in the crowd, which is a common occurrence and an honor at his shows. On the band’s website, tree winners can post pictures of their newly-planted gifts.
After the brief intermission, Cake came back on the play more hit songs like “It’s been a long time” but with more of a jam-session feel. McCrea ...

Angels and Airwaves at The Marquee

The dynamic duo of Say Anything and Angels and Airwaves came to the valley’s own Marquee Theatre to deliver the desert-dwellers a show only they could deliver. First to take the stage at 8:00 PM was Say anything who opened with “Hate Everyone”. That was soon followed by their slightly more uplifting tune, “Shiksa”. Next, came their all too familiar and delightfully raunchy single, “Wow, I can be sexual too”; there was not a person in the crowd who did not take pleasure in uttering every distinguishing line of the beloved single. Say Anything went on to deliver a high-energy yet gritty performance that left the fans with no complaints.
Now it was time for the main attraction, as the lights dimmed the noise of the crowd did the exact opposite. As the noise rose the anticipation grew until finally Tom Delonge and the rest of Angels and Airwaves took ...

30 Seconds to Mars

Jared Leto and the boys of 30 Seconds to Mars finally arrived in Phoenix/Tempe after their long awaited show had been cancelled months ago. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the Neon Trees but I did get to take in the spectacle that is 30 Seconds to Mars.

The band came out and opened with the song “Escape” and I was quite taken back by Jared Leto’s presence. A reddish/pink Mohawk topped his head along with a white jacket Michael Jackson style and sunglasses plus a voice you could tell was a bit worn from the road but still managed to belt out the lyrics in a very epic fashion. He even carried a flashlight gun with him onstage, pointing at all his adoring fans, encouraging them to dance, clap and get on each other’s shoulders, as well as taking on some guitar riffs from time to time.

With a nearly sold out show they hit the stage around 9:15. Usually the lead singer, Lacey Mosely, is the main focus and the most entertaining to watch . That was not the case tonight. Bassist Pat Seals stole the show. Flyleaf had two platforms at the front of the stage for the guitarist to jump on and off. Lead guitarist Sameer Bhattacharya did use this option to often but Pat Seals did. He was all over that platform. Jumping on and off of it the entire show rocking his long hair. He also decided the platform wasn’t enough and used the drum kit as well. His energy was full throttle all night. In a surprise move, that is rarely done, when Flyleaf finished their set they walked off stage and did not come back ...

Coheed and Cambria

Coheed and Cambria rolled into Tempe today not even a month after the release of there new studio album Year of the Black Rainbow. The Keywork tattoos were in full effect today as people strolled into the Marquee for this sold out show. The Amory Wars, co-written by lead singer Claudio Sanchez, were on sale in the Marquee to get the super fans in the mood before the show.

At 9:15 Coheed walked on stage to a deafening roar from the crowd. As the first song started to play I knew this would be the loudest show I have ever heard at the Marquee. If your ears were not bleeding at the end of the show you were not close enough to enjoy it. Claudio was all over the stage giving his heart and soul to the crowd. With his one of a kind hair do bouncing all over the ...

4.16.2010 White Rabbits

When the White Rabbits took the stage at 9:45pm, a large crowd was waiting for them; and had been waiting for them since 6pm that evening. Even though there were two separate groups of 20 and younger, and 21 and over, there was no divide in the support for the band – everyone at the Clubhouse loved the White Rabbits. Their six-membered band set the tone for the evening with loud percussion and strong vocals. Six memebers may seem extreme for a band but the White Rabbits make it work with four singers doubling as guitarists, a bassist, and a pianist; and two drummers which accounts for their one-of-a-kind sound. They all showed versatility as well when the second percussionist doubled as a guitarists, making four guitarists and one bassist. They wound the crowd up with their setlist, mainly sticking to the tracks off of their most recent album, “It’s Frightening.” When the band ...

4.16 Authority Zero

If you’re a fan of local music this was the concert for you. Five local bands opened up for our pride and joy of Arizona, Authority Zero. The Reggie punk vibe was in full effect all night, and got the crowd ready for Authority. Anyone who has seen Authority Zero knows Jason DeVore is the back bone of the band. He brings an excitement and enthusiasm lost on most artists. I have seen Authority Zero a few times and Jason has never mailed it in. He is true to his fan base and knows how to please. Jason was rocking the stage all night, including throwing water and water bottles at the crowd. Only to be thrown right back him. While running all over the stage you could see the sweat fly off his head which is refreshing knowing he is giving it his all. He feeds of the ...

4.15.10 Arctic Monkeys

Traveling from England to Arizona, The Arctic Monkeys rocked Tempe tonight with their British indie–rock sound. They had no time for introductions when they arrived on stage and started with the music. It was like a machine gun of music one song after the other, with no breaks in-between. It’s refreshing to see a band not B.S with the crowd and just play their music. By the third song they had the whole front row moshing and the rest of the crowd jumping and singing along. To only slow it down for a few songs to calm everyone down, then amp it right back up. Their heavy guitar licks with a killer drummer really set the crowd in a frenzy at some points of the show. The strobe light effect during some of there songs, sometimes matching the beat of the drummer, really set the mood for the show. ...
