Against Me! & Silversun Pickups @ The Marquee
Posted 7/18/2010 1:15:00 AM
Tempe’s own Marquee Theatre hosted two of the biggest alternative bands out right now. Against Me!, and Silversun Pickups both saw it fit to come pay the valley another visit, and they were welcomed with nothing less than wide open arms and affection by their fans.
The first out of the duo to take the stage was Against Me! At 8:50. Opening with their song “High Pressure Low”, off of their new album White Crosses. Opening with the new stuff paved the way for beloved favorites like “Thrash Unreal” off of their 2007 album New Wave. However, that was followed by the song “White Crosses”, obviously from their newest record. The band did a great job at mixing the old and the new. That was soon followed by yet another favorite “White People for Peace”. One could not help but notice the basic light setup, and how it proved to ...
Slightly Stoopid @ Celebrity Theatre
Posted 6/27/2010 12:18:00 AM
The Expendables and Slightly Stoopid met here in the valley at the Celebrity Theatre to deliver the desert dwellers a night of reggae fueled merriment. The entire placed seemed to buzz with excitement even before the first act came on. Fans from all over the valley came with extremely high expectations for Thursday’s lineup.
The party was sparked with a performance by The Expendables who took the stage at 8:00 PM. It took them only an hour to warm up the crowd for Slightly Stoopid to take the stage. They played tunes off of their albums No Time to Worry, Gettin’ Dirty, and Open Container. They closed with one of their better known songs “Bowl for Two”. The performance left the viewers with even higher expectations of the show than when they had first arrived.
Unlike most shows, the crowd was not left to sit and make their own entertainment ...
Cake @ The Marquee 6/18

Cake came on stage to a nearly sold out crowd at the Marquee with no opening bands. Fans were pleasanlty surprised; this allowed them to enjoy nearly a solid two hours of performance with a brief 15 minute interval. The first set contained such hits as, “Stickshifts and Safetybelts” off their second album Fashion Nugget released in 1996, and “Sheep Go to Heaven” off the third album Prolonging the Magic released in 1998. Half way through the first set lead singer John McCrea brought out some small apple tree sapplings to give away to lucky winners in the crowd, which is a common occurrence and an honor at his shows. On the band’s website, tree winners can post pictures of their newly-planted gifts.
After the brief intermission, Cake came back on the play more hit songs like “It’s been a long time” but with more of a jam-session feel. McCrea ...
Angels and Airwaves at The Marquee
Posted 5/26/2010 1:11:00 AM
The dynamic duo of Say Anything and Angels and Airwaves came to the valley’s own Marquee Theatre to deliver the desert-dwellers a show only they could deliver. First to take the stage at 8:00 PM was Say anything who opened with “Hate Everyone”. That was soon followed by their slightly more uplifting tune, “Shiksa”. Next, came their all too familiar and delightfully raunchy single, “Wow, I can be sexual too”; there was not a person in the crowd who did not take pleasure in uttering every distinguishing line of the beloved single. Say Anything went on to deliver a high-energy yet gritty performance that left the fans with no complaints.
Now it was time for the main attraction, as the lights dimmed the noise of the crowd did the exact opposite. As the noise rose the anticipation grew until finally Tom Delonge and the rest of Angels and Airwaves took ...
30 Seconds to Mars
Posted 5/17/2010 12:00:00 AM
Jared Leto and the boys of 30 Seconds to Mars finally arrived in Phoenix/Tempe after their long awaited show had been cancelled months ago. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the Neon Trees but I did get to take in the spectacle that is 30 Seconds to Mars.
The band came out and opened with the song “Escape” and I was quite taken back by Jared Leto’s presence. A reddish/pink Mohawk topped his head along with a white jacket Michael Jackson style and sunglasses plus a voice you could tell was a bit worn from the road but still managed to belt out the lyrics in a very epic fashion. He even carried a flashlight gun with him onstage, pointing at all his adoring fans, encouraging them to dance, clap and get on each other’s shoulders, as well as taking on some guitar riffs from time to time.
