Cake @ The Marquee 6/18

Cake came on stage to a nearly sold out crowd at the Marquee with no opening bands. Fans were pleasanlty surprised; this allowed them to enjoy nearly a solid two hours of performance with a brief 15 minute interval. The first set contained such hits as, “Stickshifts and Safetybelts” off their second album Fashion Nugget released in 1996, and “Sheep Go to Heaven” off the third album Prolonging the Magic released in 1998. Half way through the first set lead singer John McCrea brought out some small apple tree sapplings to give away to lucky winners in the crowd, which is a common occurrence and an honor at his shows. On the band’s website, tree winners can post pictures of their newly-planted gifts.
After the brief intermission, Cake came back on the play more hit songs like “It’s been a long time” but with more of a jam-session feel. McCrea continued to connect with the audience encouraging them to drink beer and stick it to the man while finishing their song, “I’m So Sick Of You,” before walking off stage to prepare for their encore. When the band walked back on, they indulged the crowd in one of their most popular songs: McCrea split the audience in half to encourage participation and had each side chanting the chorus of “na-na-na’s” during their hit single, “Short Skirt Long Jacket.” They ended the show with a hearty farewell and another fan-favorite “Going the Distance.” This was definitely a show that fans will not soon forget!
