Jared Leto and the boys of 30 Seconds to Mars finally arrived in Phoenix/Tempe after their long awaited show had been cancelled months ago. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the Neon Trees but I did get to take in the spectacle that is 30 Seconds to Mars.
The band came out and opened with the song “Escape” and I was quite taken back by Jared Leto’s presence. A reddish/pink Mohawk topped his head along with a white jacket Michael Jackson style and sunglasses plus a voice you could tell was a bit worn from the road but still managed to belt out the lyrics in a very epic fashion. He even carried a flashlight gun with him onstage, pointing at all his adoring fans, encouraging them to dance, clap and get on each other’s shoulders, as well as taking on some guitar riffs from time to time.
After the first few songs, the band ventured into their more popular songs including “Search and Destroy”, “From Yesterday” and “This is War” meanwhile Jared shed his clothing piece by piece. He then moved into the solo-acoustic portion of the set where he took some requests from the crowd and eventually ventured into “The Kill” with the entire band joining him onstage about halfway through the song. The band took a very brief encore and then came back and played “a very rare song” entitled “Hurricane” as Jared thanked X103.9 and Marc Young for supporting their band to a venue full of applause which was great to hear. He also pulled a handicapped member of the crowd up on stage, wheelchair and all, up to watch the remainder of the set which was very cool to see. The band wrapped up the night with “Kings and Queens” which featured a group of our winners which we so cleverly named the X-Choir who took the stage along with a few hand-picked folks from the front of the crowd to help sing with him.
All in all 30 Seconds to Mars can put on a very interesting/entertaining show and sure knows how to keep the crowd engaged throughout their entire set. Not being the biggest fan of the band, my range of emotions towards the show was a roller coaster that left me pleasantly surprised at the end.
